The stitching between the pages of a series — retired by Google, not by readers.
The pair declares that the document belongs to a sequence — pagination, chapters, a journal — and points at what comes before and after. The specification still allows the browser to treat next as a preloading hint: the next page of the series is the web's oldest bet.
The history: in 2019 Google announced it had not used the pair as an indexing signal for years, and the headlines declared it dead. But the semantics never belonged to Google — browsers, screen readers and reading tools may follow the stitching, and it remains in the specification, waiting for an instrument.
