The middle dash of ranges: pages 12–20, the years 1990–1999.
The exact midpoint between the hyphen and the em dash, as wide as an N — the en dash. Its trade is the range — dates, pages, scores — and the link between names: the Rio–Niterói bridge, the London–Paris line.
The mistake it corrects is the keyboard hyphen in ranges: 12-20 reads as a compound word; 12–20 reads as “from 12 to 20”. In British typography it also doubles as the sentence dash, with spaces around it – like this.
Wrong: pages 12-20 · the Rio-Paris flight · 2010-2020
