UNI-003 · Dashes

The hyphen that won't let the line split the word in half.

Identical to the ordinary hyphen in shape, opposite in behavior: where the keyboard's hyphen offers a break point, U+2011 welds. The compound crosses the end of the line whole.

It is the gem for phone numbers, codes and compounds too short to split: an 0800 broken after the hyphen becomes two orphaned numbers. It has no named entity — you call it by number, ‑.

Wrong: call 0800-72-4040 (the line may break after each hyphen)
Right: call 0800‑72‑4040 (the number crosses whole)
The same shape, welded to what it joins.
